Panel Discussion with Art Therapists Corene Jonat, Claudia Mandler McKnight and Jon Oelrichs
On Thursday May 5, in honour of Canadian Mental Health Awareness Week, the MacLarenArtCentre will host a panel discussion featuring three experienced art therapists: Corene Jonat, Expressive Art Therapist and Sensory Exploration Arts Coordinator, DeafBlind Ontario; Claudia Mandler McKnight, Art Therapist, Candelighter’s Simcoe; and Jon Oelrichs, Expressive Art Therapist. Each will share his/her unique insights into building community engagement in good mental health practices and building paths to healing and self-discovery for all ages. Also on May 5, the MacLaren will celebrate Art on the Edge, an exhibition of works by Simcoe County youth exploring mental health. Please join us for the reception from 6:00 to 7:00 pm in the MacLaren lobby.
Over the past five years, the MacLaren and the Canadian Mental Health Association have worked together to create programmes and exhibitions that bring awareness and acceptance to the challenges of mental health. In 2011, the MacLaren’s focus for Canadian Mental Health Awareness Week (May 1 to 8) is supporting mental health awareness for young people through Art on the Edge, a programme of exhibitions and community outreach that includes this panel discussion, a youth exhibition, an exhibition of select works drawn from the MacLaren’s Permanent Collection, and hands-on workshops for students, families and children.
